چکیده

Set Partitioning in Hierarchical Trees (SPIHT) is an efficient wavelet-based progressive image-compression technique, designed to minimize the mean-squared error (MSE) between the original and decoded imagery. Since wireless channels suffer from significant bit error rates, some mechanism to protect the encoded image is required. Many error control solutions have been proposed to address the problem of transmitting images, and these algorithms add redundancy at the source level. Asymmetric modulation method, Hierarchical Quadrature Amplitude Modulation (HQAM) provides alternative means of unequal error protection without increasing the bandwidth. This paper examines the image transmission suitability of using SPIHT as an image coder and Hierarchical 16-QAM as modulation technique where non-uniform signal constellation is used to provide different degrees of protection to the significant and non-significant bits. The performance of SPIHT coded image transmission is evaluated in Simulink using gray test image for different values of the modulation parameter and bpp (bitper-pixel).

Hierarchical Quadrature Amplitude Modulation For Image Transmission Over Erroneous Wireless Channels

112106-6868 IJVIPNS-IJENS © December 2011 IJENS I J E N S Abstract—Bit dependency of image compression algorithms introduce error extension effects in transmission of compressed images and considerably reduce the received image quality. Channel coding provides protection against these errors but at the cost of increased bandwidth. Asymmetric modulation methods like QAM and QPSK provide alternat...

Energy Efficient Modulation Design with Unequal Error Protection for Multiresolution Image Transmission

Reliable image and video communications over noisy channels has been a great challenge especially for the transmission of large volume of data over unreliable and bandwidth limited channels. One technique to deal with this problem involves taking an existing source encoder and then protecting the bits using appropriate channel coding method. However, channel coding techniques add redundant bits...

H.264 Layered Coded Video over Wireless Networks: Channel Coding and Modulation Constraints

This paper considers the prioritised transmission of H.264 layered coded video over wireless channels. For appropriate protection of video data, methods such as prioritised forward error correction coding (FEC) or hierarchical quadrature amplitudemodulation (HQAM) can be employed, but each imposes system constraints. FEC provides good protection but at the price of a high overhead and complexit...

A novel design of physical layer network coding in strong asymmetric two-way relay channels

The quality of two-way links is always asymmetric in practical two-way relay channels (TWRC) and therefore, the capacity of TWRC will be limited by the weaker link. An asymmetric modulation scheme, with physical layer network coding, was presented in order to improve the transmission reliability in TWRC. This makes full use of the stronger link to improve the overall transmission rate and also ...

Robust Transmission of Multimedia Compressed Streams over Band-limited Wireless Channels Using Wavelet Packet Division Multiplexing

Due to the extensive use of predictive coding, multimedia compressed streams exhibit different sensitivities to transmission errors. Therefore, they are suitable for unequal error protection (UEP) techniques which aim at preserving the integrity of sensitive data. UEP is mainly based on differentiated error control coding which raises the robustness of data, but also increases the transmission ...
